Mmmm can you just taste that sweet and nutty crunch of homemade granola?! I can!
To be honest, I’ve never been a commercial cereal lover. I’ve probably purchased boxed cereal (I’m talking about the frosted flakes or fruit loops kinds) a handful of times in my life. Not because I think its bad for us or because its over-processed (I have plenty of things that aren’t good for us that I splurge on or keep in the pantry). But just because I don’t care for the taste!
Granola though, over-processed or not, that is something I can get behind. It has so much flavor! And crunch. And the perfect balance of nutty to sweet.
Enter: homemade granola. What I love about this homemade granola recipe is that its SO simple and basic. Its the perfect base to get started with, and as you get more comfortable making it you can add or switch out ingredients as you please.
If you’re not a big fan of sliced almonds, try some chopped walnuts or chopped pecans. Add chopped, dark chocolate for a little something extra. Decrease the maple syrup if you’re trying to watch your sugar intake. Add pumpkin pie spice and pumpkin seeds in the fall!
Also, use what you have on hand! I mention in the recipe that old-fashioned, rolled oats are best. But to be honest, when I made this batch I didn’t have enough! I did have some organic, quick oats though, so I did half of each. It still tasted great.
I make this granola about 1-2 times per week, and we absolutely LOVE it. Its such an easy granola recipe for yogurt. I usually buy a tub of whole milk, plain (occasionally vanilla) yogurt. I add a few tablespoons of chia seeds to it, some honey if its plain, and top it off with this granola and banana slices. YUMMM! I can’t wait for you to try it.

Is homemade granola good for you?
Most likely, yes! Of course there are a lot of different ways to make homemade granola, and endless recipes on the internet. If you stick to whole and natural ingredients (like this recipe), then I would say it can definitely be good for you.
You can adjust the amount of maple syrup if you’re worried about having too high of sugar. Use good quality ingredients, and you’ll be golden!
You can also make it more healthy by adding in nutrient-dense extras, like chia or flax seeds, other healthy nuts, etc.
A Few Notes About Granola
Before you get out your mixing bowl and start whipping up a batch, I just wanted to mention a few tips!
A lot of different things can be substituted in this recipe. For example, you can substitute honey for maple syrup, walnuts for the almonds, dried bananas, dried mango, whatever you’re feeling!, for the dried cranberries.
Funny story, the first time I ever made homemade granola, I kept thinking that I would know it was done when it got crunchy and stuck together. Well, it doesn’t get crunchy and stick together until it COOLS! Needless to say, that first patch was a deep golden brown, and verrrry overcooked, LOL!
SO, just trust the recipe and don’t overcook your granola. ALSO, don’t mess with it too much as its cooling if you want it to stick together more and have big chunks. Over than that, this recipe is pretty foolproof. Enjoy!
Homemade Granola Ingredients
- half cup of melted coconut oil
- half cup of pure maple syrup
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/2 tsp salt
- 3 cups oats (preferably old-fashioned, rolled oats)
- 1 cup sliced almonds
- 1 cup dried fruit (cranberries, raisins, etc.) chopped if necessary
Homemade Granola Directions
Preheat oven to 300 degrees and get out a normal sized baking sheet.
Combine all ingredients, except for the dried fruit, in a mixing bowl and mix well.
Pour into baking sheet and spread evenly. Bake at 300 degrees for 20 minutes or until slightly golden.
Remove from the oven and quickly mix in the dried fruit. Spread evenly again and allow to cool completely before placing in airtight containers.
If you want larger chunks try not to mess with it too much as its cooling. When its done cooling, you should have to break some of it up into smaller pieces in order to store it.
